Belemnite Fossil in Matrix – Cretaceous | Blackdown Formation, Walsh River, QLD

A beautifully preserved fossil belemnite presented in its natural matrix, recovered from the Blackdown Formation along the Walsh River, Queensland, Australia. This specimen dates to the Cretaceous period, approximately 120 million years old, from a time when a vast inland sea covered much of central Queensland.

Belemnites were squid-like cephalopods that thrived in the ancient seas of the Mesozoic Era. Their bullet-shaped internal shells (rostra) are among the most distinctive and recognisable fossils of the Cretaceous, and specimens preserved in matrix offer a wonderful window into the ancient seafloor environment.

The Blackdown Formation is a significant Australian fossil-bearing unit, and Walsh River material is prized for its quality of preservation. A superb display piece with genuine Australian provenance.
