The minerals
Siderite — iron carbonate — is a characteristic species of the Broken Hill metamorphic environment, forming rhombohedral crystals with a warm, earthy lustre. Its presence here reflects the iron-rich geochemistry of one of the world's great ore bodies.
Wavellite is the real visual surprise of this piece — an aluminium phosphate hydroxide mineral that forms distinctive radiating spherical aggregates, like tiny starbursts frozen in the rock. Its pale green to yellow-green colour and globular crystal habit make it instantly recognisable and a favourite among phosphate mineral collectors.
