Snowflake obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed from rapidly cooling silica-rich lava, and the distinctive white ‘snowflake’ patterns are clusters of cristobalite — a form of silica that crystallises within the obsidian as it slowly devitrifies over time, creating the characteristic white radial patterns against the jet-black glass.

In sphere form, the contrast between the deep, glossy black obsidian and the bright white snowflake inclusions is at its most dramatic — each sphere is unique in the distribution and size of its snowflake patterns, making every piece a one-of-a-kind display object. The high-polish finish enhances the glassy lustre of the obsidian and brings the snowflake patterns into sharp relief.
